More Media Alarmist “1984 DoubleSpeak” The Toxic Waste Is Coming
-
The "real" toxic waste is already here and most of it is imported from New York.
Virginia remains the No. 2 importer of trash in the nation

Roanoke Times AP, 1-29-2016,
Pg Bus 6:
BIG HEADLINE: Coal ash pouring
into Virginia
landfill
Over one million tons of “toxic
waste” is being moved to a central Va landfill.
-
-
Be Afraid! Dreaded “toxic waste” now coming to a
landfill near you!
Just two little problems
with that claim:
The EPA has NOT labeled coal
ash from utility power plants “toxic waste”.
https://www.duke-energy.com/pdfs/Coal-ash-toxicity.pdf
The Environmental Protection
Agency has evaluated coal ash extensively and has repeatedly determined that it
is not a hazardous waste.
-
The landfill involved has
been accepting coal ash from within Virginia
and out-of-state impoundments since it opened in 1993.
-
-
Yet more “1984 DoubleSpeak”
using false scary labels and big headlines to stir-up visions of Fear,
Uncertainty and Doubt FUD amongst the public.
Fits in well with the Pravda
Media promotion of Obama’s War on Coal.

Perhaps if one were to
really worry about waste being shipped into Virginia
one could focus on the inter-state massive volumes of garbage (that contains
who knows what) coming into Virginia
from other states by truck and ocean-barges.
http://articles.dailypress.com/2006-03-06/news/0603060045_1_covanta-energy-garbage-south-hampton-roads
“Covanta Energy, a New Jersey-based company, is developing the garbage
terminal, which would be built just north of the Jordan Bridge on the Southern
Branch of the Elizabeth River, on vacant land owned by the Portsmouth Economic
Development Authority.Barges carrying as many as 2,500 tons of trash a day from
New York City and elsewhere would offload at the site,”

Trash imports into Virginia increase,
report says
http://pilotonline.com/news/local/environment/trash-imports-into-virginia-increase-report-says/article_bfe248a8-51c6-55b0-ae43-ed72586b1b8d.html
“About 5.5 million tons of
trash and debris were imported to the Old Dominion for disposal in 2010, says
the report by the state Department of Environmental Quality - up from 5.3
million tons the previous year.
Trash shipments by rail,
barge and truck peaked in 2004 at more than 7.7 million tons and had been
slowly ebbing since then, mostly because of a weakening economy and competition
from other states hungry for disposal fees, such as Ohio
and Michigan,
according to records and officials.
Virginia remains the No. 2 importer of trash in the nation,
behind Pennsylvania,
which has seen its imports steadily drop during the past six years, slipping to
6.3 million tons in 2010, said Kevin Sunday, a state environmental spokesman
there.”
