In reflection, In the US, the death rate was so great in the 1918 Influenza Pandemic that in Philadelphia the bodies were placed at the curbside and the Sanitation workers picked-up the bodies in wagons.
The worst horrors were seen in Philadelphia, where the number of deaths approached 1,000 a day at the pandemic’s peak.

One pathetic outcome was the children’s hopscotch chant:
I had a little bird
His name was Venza
I opened-up the window
And   ‘In Flew Venza’

A macabre reflection back to the ‘Black Plague’ was the children’s chant:
Ring around the rosy  ---- the skin lesions
Pockets full of posies  ---- flowers in pockets to cover odors
Ashes, Ashes  -------------- all dead were burned
We all fall down ------------ we all will die

Not many ‘safe spaces’ for children back then!
