A Richmond police sergeant violated policy by sharing license plate camera data with the FBI, per a new audit.
Specifically, an FBI special agent asked a Richmond police sergeant to give them an image of a vehicle in Richmond that was believed to be connected to a Washington, D.C. homicide investigation.
By searching for and sharing this information with an out-of-state law enforcement agency, the sergeant violated department policy.

“While I appreciate the sergeant’s willingness to assist in a homicide investigation, sharing ALPR data — even of a single vehicle — with federal partners or agencies outside the Commonwealth of Virginia is prohibited,” said Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards in a Thursday press release.
