University Freshmen In ‘Mental Health Crisis’ – Really?

-
It is difficult to process what is going on at the University of Michigan.
Apparently, the University has declared that incoming freshmen are too mentally unstable or immature or something to enter the academic competition of college.
What a pathetic and sad assessment of the top US high school graduates.
They should be confronting the administration for belittling and marginalizing them.
What are the football coaches doing with their freshmen player candidates?
Hasn’t US college been an academic competition since Harvard started in 1636?
At my first day at Rutgers in 1956 the Provost addressed the freshmen class with:
“Look to your right, look to your left – those students will be gone when you graduate!”
And they were! It was a self-fulfilling prophesy since the number of rooms, seats and professors were sized to that attrition declaration.
No one stood-up and declared they were too fragile to be in a competitive endeavor.
Our class included over a dozen Korean War Vets on GI-Bill --- don’t remember any of them requesting less academic competition because of what they had experienced – on the contrary – they were serious and outstanding.
