Hail The Roanoke LogPerch

-
Apparently the Roanoke Kiwanis Club has joined the Roanoke Times to canonize and personalize Larry The Roanoke LogPerch.
CASEY: Smokey Bear, meet Larry the Roanoke Logperch
(sorry for the excruciating long web-address, it’s a Roanoke Times thing)

The Roanoke LogPerch is on the so called endangered list as was the Roanoke SnailDarter until it was removed in 2021.
Snail darter, tiny and notorious, is no longer endangered | WFXRtv
-
There’s a contrarian side to the personalization of this little fish.
The SnailDarter and the LogPerch were used to ‘convert’ the Roanoke River Flood Control Project into the Roanoke River Bank Beautification Project, thereby condemning Roanoke to suffer the consequences of the often experienced flooding that reaches the doors of Carillion Hospital.
-
Instead of dredging-down the River Bottom as was the original plan, the Corps of Engineers just picked up the flood-delivered trees and trash from the River and then spent most of the $70+ millions of taxpayers money beautifying the River Bank and dressing up the often-flooded bike-walk path.
-
Now many millions of additional taxpayer dollars are being spent condemning property and moving residents to higher-ground to mitigate the nonexistent so called Flood Control.
-

“Larry the Roanoke Logperch,” by Melissa Rooney and illustrated by Jane Gabrielle, was commissioned by the Roanoke Kiwanis Club, as part of an effort to educate local children about the importance of an endangered species in their hometown.
-
Perhaps it would be ‘educational’ to also introduce the children to the massive negative 'important'  impacts Larry has had, and continues to have, upon Roanoke and many of its citizens and businesses.
