Radiation Bill A Sad Reminder Of Not So Cold War

-
Senate Moves to Expand ‘Downwinders’ Payments for Cold War Radiation Exposure - WSJ
Sen. Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) succeeded in winning over enough GOP colleagues to pass a major expansion of payments to Americans who were exposed to windblown radioactive particles from nuclear tests and uranium facilities, a cause he has championed for years.
The vote on the measure, which is expected to have a price tag in the tens of billions of dollars, passed 69-30, with 20 Republicans joining most Democrats in voting in favor. The measure faces an uncertain path in the House.

These efforts cause one to reflect on being in the Catskills where the westerly prevailing winds deposited fallout, particularly from the Nevada airborne tests.
On occasion some selected dairy farms were directed to dump their milk, but not all, and small family milkers were overlooked.
Country folks drank milk directly from the cows thereby missing whatever benefit milk processing may have provided.
Cows were "concentrators" by eating grass and hay that had 'caught' the radioactive dust and passed it into their milk.
Most country folks also had gardens upon which the radiation dust fell.
The number of rural cancer-type illnesses clearly seemed well out of proportion to the population.
It’s not clear how “security” played a role in minimizing publication of the issues involved.
Perhaps the wars had many more casualties than reflected on the battlefields.

The Westerly Winds Bring Radiation Again

Unfortunately we were not informed about nor protected from the major radiation threats from the multinational 500 nuclear weapons air-bursts from 1945 through 1970. This radiation from weapons-grade materials were released into the air from both fission and fusion bombs. The radiation swept across the US from West to East falling out across the entire country.
