For those who have Jewish friends, sooner or later the question arises ‘why don’t Jews eat pork?’ The typical response ‘it’s just part of their religious rules’.
Apparently several thousand years ago Rabbis observed that many people who ate pork became ill and many died. Somehow the Rabbis associated illness with eating pork – a cause/effect clearly Not obvious and well before microscopes!
Fast forward to today ---- where the disease is called trichinosis and may be within the meat of pigs and bears --- and requires proper cooking before consumption.
