The House narrowly passed Republicans’ sprawling tax-and-spending bill, delivering a major second-term victory for President Trump and again demonstrating his power to keep GOP lawmakers in line.
-
The 218-214 vote Thursday sends the measure to Trump’s desk, ahead of the July 4 target he set for Congress to finish the legislation that cuts taxes, boosts border security and lowers social safety-net spending. Trump and GOP leaders muscled the bill through the House after an all-night session, despite many lawmakers’ misgivings about the version the Senate passed 51-50 earlier this week.
-
“We are at the precipice of the new golden age of America,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R., La.).
-
Working with exceptionally slim margins in the House and Senate, Republicans achieved a goal they had sought for nearly eight years by erasing the Dec. 31, 2025 expiration date from their 2017 tax cuts. Their bill indefinitely extends the higher standard deduction and child tax credits that benefit middle-income families along with tax-rate cuts, business deductions and estate-tax reductions that tilt toward upper-income households.
-
On top of that, they added temporary versions of Trump’s tax-cut priorities, creating new deductions for tipped workers, overtime pay, car-loan interest and senior citizens. They expanded the cap on the state and local tax deduction to at least $40,000 for five years, a measure that got a handful of blue-state House GOP lawmakers on board.
