As a youngster growing-up in the Catskills in the 1950s I was witness to the major influx of NYC folks seeking cooler weather for the summers. Included in that migration were many self-avowed communists, many in our area worked for the "Daily Worker" publication and unabashedly handed out copies at every opportunity. The Party lost much of its support during the Cold War and the Korean War.
Apparently, the NY communist party has reconstituted itself and is on course to take over NY’s City Hall this year.

As a young Army Officer, I was at the Fliegerhorst Caserne in Hanau Germany June 1963 when JFK stopped there on the way to Berlin to give his Anti-Communist “Ich Bin Berliner” 'Evil Empire' speech.

Communists were increasingly native-born (although many were the children of immigrants). Party-organized mass meetings in the old Madison Square Garden were packed with as many as 20,000 participants; the annual May Day parades drew tens of thousands, too.
