Many are criticizing him for his views and statements. Negative views were also focused on the Alaska acquisition-1867 and statehood-1958 and the acquisition of Hawaii-1898 and statehood-1959.
Clearly Alaska would be a BIG issue if still owned by Russia and Hawaii would have been a BIG issue if owned by Japan before WW2.

The Soviets already have a major Arctic military and commercial presence and have bilateral development entities with Norway.
Soviet expansion into the Arctic and Greenland is an unacceptable high risk just as was the Russian expansion into Cuba during JFK’s time and for many of the same reasons.

Norway has joined a partnership with Russia to develop massive oil and gas fields offshore deep in the Arctic Ocean. So much for worrying about the Arctic Ice Sheet and CO2 global warming.
