Instead of inventing a new resolution, why not just implement 1559 enacted Sept 2004, during the last Lebanese crisis.

That resolution states that Hezbollah and other militias should be removed from Lebanon and that the Lebanese Army should be the only military force in that country. Had that been done – things might be very different today!

Why am I not seeing all kinds of accolades for these accomplishments on page one (1)?
I thought the Roanoke Times Editors and their associates would be elated with these activities and accomplishments. They really like the talk stuff.

Roanoke Times, 7/12/06, Pg Va 2: Franklin Co. planners OK AEP power line to support the 17% growth rate in eastern Franklin Co.
Al Angle was quoted as saying: "Do you penalize property owners by ruining and devaluing their land to satisfy a gluttonous need of the lake area?"

It’s disappointing that in the heat of controversy a very good person like Mr. Angle would use such a disparaging comment toward another area of the County.

Perhaps Mr. Angle and others might reflect upon the following: The traditional economic base of Franklin County has collapsed during the last 15 years as textiles, farming, tobacco, furniture and shine have been reduced to a fraction of their former levels.

Yet Franklin County’s unemployment rate is low, new businesses are flourishing along the 122 and 40E corridors and in Rocky Mount. Major school additions and enhancements have been made, there’s a new library and YMCA and many government and social facilities have been developed and enhanced and soon there will be a County park on SML for all to enjoy.

The funding for many of these things that benefits everyone in Franklin County and the surrounding area is largely based upon the County reaping over 60% of their revenue from the "gluttonous lake area".

Perhaps Mr. Angle and others might also reflect on the fact that many residents at the lake have implored the County Board of Supervisors to enact and implement policies that ensure reasonable and prudent growth at SML. The State has even empowered the Counties to control growth based on infrastructure capabilities and growth. However the reality is that the F.C. Board is so hooked-on the additional tax base growth that there are very few projects that are denied or scaled-down.

The Federal Government (FERC) has even taken SML shoreline management away from the Counties in order to try to get some reasonable control over run-away growth and density.

It’s also interesting to note that a similar growth situation has come to Rocky Mount in the form of a new large high-density development that apparently the Rocky Mount Board is going to embrace.

Perhaps everyone in the County should focus on the update to The Comprehensive Plan as a vehicle to achieve reasonable and prudent growth and development in every part of this beautiful place. Each of us should call our County Supervisor today and ask him what he is doing personally to ensure reasonable and prudent growth and development in Franklin County.

Roanoke Times, 7/9/06, pg A9: AP article: North Korea well-versed in art of provocation. "For the US the main risk seems to be that North Korea is beginning early testing of a missile that could throw the equivalent of a rock at Alaska".

The left-wing media mis&dis-information about the North Korean nuclear missile threat is astonishing. Why is The Roanoke Times and their associates publishing such misleading information to the American people?

For example: the "six ‘small’ Scud missiles" that they launched are equivalent to the 1960’s versions of the American Honest John and Corporal missiles deployed during the cold war.

These missiles carried W-7 nuclear warheads with the power of 2 to 40 kilotons of power.

It appears that North Korea has between four and six of these warheads on-hard.

"Plan won’t work"! Who writes this tripe? Certainly blowing a hole in the tunnels under the Hudson will "work"; meaning death, destruction and chaos.
As for the concept of creating major damage at the NY end of the tunnel at the World Trade Center, that would depend on the speed and volume of the water when it hits the end. A hydraulic-shock can do great damage and clearly fast moving water can go much higher than its source. Ever watch waves crash over the "break waters" at the shore?
Who is author Adam Lisberg and where did he get his hydraulics degree?

The Democrat NJ legislature and Democrat Governor have been in a tug-of-war on how to take one of the most taxed and indebted states to a new level.

The Governor wanted to raise the 6% sales tax to 7%. The legislature didn’t know what they wanted to do to establish a state budget.

Apparently no one thought of the alternative to "CUT SPENDING"!

The compromise: go for the 7%! Doesn’t sound like a compromise, sounds like typical Democrat Tax & Spend. No problem, the taxpayers can handle it.

Why is NJ in such financial trouble when the economy is strong and unemployment is low and interest rates are low? Why aren’t they running a surplus like most states are this year? What’s going to happen when we go into a slow-down cycle?

What a great opportunity for the left-wing media to interview Bill Clinton, Bill Richardson and Madeline Albright. These are the folks who had the opportunity to influence this problem at its beginning, but instead they gave North Korea money, food and fuel for their "word" that all would be OK.

Roanoke Times, 7/1/06, Pg Va 9 Editorial: The Supreme Court reins in the president. In a long overdue rebuke, the judiciary rejected the notion that the commander-in-chief can conduct the war on terror however he wishes.

Indeed they did. And in the process they declared that the military tribunals conducted by FDR during WW2 were not OK.

They also declared that the Nuremberg War Trials setup by Truman were not OK because they were newly established tribunals for a specific purpose.

The Justices showed themselves to indeed be lawyers. Let’s not focus on the battlefield environment relative to police crime investigation processes. Let’s just reflect on how well OJ’s lawyers would fare on the rules of evidence in a terrorist battlefield in Afghanistan. "Lieutenant, I see in this photograph that you weren’t wearing white booties over your boots as you collected forensic evidence", "that makes all the evidence you collected non-admissible"!

The recent farce criminal trial of Moussaoui clearly demonstrated that the system that The Justices desire is totally incompatible with the reality of war.

Clearly one result of this ruling might be to no longer burden ourselves with taking prisoners. Soldiers in combat have the option to take prisoners or not. It appears that our enemies don’t burden themselves, do they?

The NY Times and associates have decided that they are the final arbiter of material that the government has defined as National Security material.
After the administration and both Democrat and Republican chairs of the 911 Commission and even after anti-war Democrat Congressman Murtha specifically asked the editor of the NY Times not to print details about the terrorist banking and finance program HE decided what was best for the safety and security of the American people.

When was this person elected by the people to be the national security manager for the American people?

What responsibility does the NY Times have for loss of life and property when we get hit again?

Talk about the arrogance of power. George W. doesn’t hold a candle to this guy!

However, this attitude and behavior is completely compatible with the keynote commencement speaker, Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger at SUNY New Paltz this June.
Mr. Sulzberger’s address (video by CSPAN) was a hostile and negative political diatribe delivered to a captive audience of young people who deserved better than they got.
With this demonstrated level of political bias and motivation it is clear that the NY Times is all about doing all they can to hurt Bush at the expense of doing what is best for our country. Whatever happened to "Ask Not?"?

Yes indeed – up-held 31 out of 32 districts (that’s 97% isn’t it?) that were directly related to the Tom DeLay plan. The Texas State Democrat Delegation cut-and-ran to New Mexico to avoid a vote on this plan. They sure didn’t uphold the Texas traditions of the Alamo!

The Texas Democrats have retaliated by having a Democrat political operative county district attorney file charges against DeLay for improper campaign contributions. Will be interesting to see how that unfolds. So far, so good!
