I Salute VMI

produces outstanding officers for the US army without prejudice or
deference to the origins of the Confederacy.
Clearly the
statutes and symbols of the Confederacy have Not undermined in any way the
commitment of VMI officers to their duty to protect and defend the Constitution
of the USA.
I served
with and under many VMI Army Officers and honor their service to duty, honor
and country.
I agree
with the Commandants’ decision to preserve the heritage of the Institution
going forward.

The editors
of the Richmond Dispatch have caved to the Deplorable Trumpers and turned
against Virginia’s
BlackFace Gov. Northam!
They penned
a major blasphemous expose demanding that Virginia’s
so called leaders do something about the ongoing riots in Richmond.
What’s
wrong with these pen-pushers – there aren’t any riots in Virginia – these are peaceful protests –
they only look, sound and smell like riots! (that's the duck test isn't it?) Talk about
foolish risk-taking – what now if the ‘protesters’ turn on the Richmond
Dispatch?; after all -- they're running out of statutes! Time to DeFund the Cops
anyone?

leadership'

the end game to these protests? The violence seems to escalate daily, not just
in Virginia’s
capital city but across the country,” it said, adding that “the absence of
leadership at all levels of government has compounded these circumstances.”
“We’ve
normalized too many behaviors that make Richmond
— and the United States
— a less safe and prosperous place to live,” the editorial continued.
“Individuals
are desecrating property and being absolved of any wrongdoing,” The Richmond
Times-Dispatch editorial said. “Banks and businesses are boarded up and,
locally, a critical public economic engine — VCU — incurred $100,000 in damage
to its Monroe Park campus in a matter of hours.”

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, Richmond City Council members, the Virginia
General Assembly and the White House, saying the “public still is looking to”
them “for a way forward,” adding that “the solution won’t be found in a press

The piece
went on to ask, “When will Stoney and City Council members acknowledge that
putting down riots to protect lives and property is a very real function of

mark each and every day. On Thursday, the 23rd day of the streak, it became the
longest streak of 90-plus high temperatures on record, dating back to 1912, for
the Star City, topping the 22-day streak from
June 23 to July 14 of 1966.”

Roanoke Virginia is in a prolonged July heat wave
with much of the month being recorded at 90 and above at the NOAA instruments at ROA airport.
This heat
wave has been described as breaking the record of consecutive 90-degree days
set back in 1966.
This begs
the question, how does a measurement of 90-degrees at ROA today relate to a
90-degree reading back in 1966?

The EPA and
other entities have established that ground-level measuring stations in locations
that have grown from rural and suburban sites to major high density sites require
‘corrections’ to the readings due to ‘Heat Island’ effects.
-
In a Heat
Island, the area is warmed by both the sun and man-made equipment and the heat
is retained day-to-day by man-made infrastructure. This results in artificially increased
temperatures compared to the same area when it was undeveloped; in this case
the differences between 2020 and 1966 at ROA.
-
This
continuous retained heat is the subject of the EPA’s focus on “Heat Islands’
resulting
from the accumulation of black-top and concrete surfaces, buildings, vehicles
and energy consuming equipment in an area.
The EPA document
indicates potential ‘heat island’ temperature range ‘corrections’ of:
“1.8–5.4°F
warmer than its surroundings and on a clear, calm night, the temperature
difference can be as much as 22°F .”

The EPA
document
outlines an
approach to quantify the ‘heat island’ effect; this apparently has Not been
done for ROA, therefore we do Not know what the appropriate corrections should
be relative to 1966.

Looking at
the ROA area that now includes the 1000 acre complex, the major black-top runways
and tarmacs, buildings, vehicles and equipment; and the adjacent I-81 and
Valley View Mall; clearly ROA now represents a major “Heat Island” compared to
1966.

Novices’
cannot quantify the ‘corrections’ that should be applied in order to make
declarations about temperature ‘Records’, however one can question the methods
used by those who are making ‘Record Declarations’ (NOAA) and ask that the work be
done to determine the ‘Heat Island Corrections’ to ensure data integrity and
fair comparisons.

Sad because
the Roanoke and New River Valleys
need and deserve a good local paper and it’s in the best interests of
