Proud-American Anecdotes
When in England , at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of 'empire building' by George Bush.
He answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.'
..You could have heard a pin drop.
************
There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American.
During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying
'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?'
-
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly:
'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people;
they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities;
they have three cafeterias wth the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day,
they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day,
and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.
We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?'
..You could have heard a pin drop.
***********
A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the U.S , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, 'whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.' He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'
-
Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied 'Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.'
-
..You could have heard a pin drop.> > >
*********
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. 'You have been to France before, monsieur?' the customs officer asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously . Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.' The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it.' 'Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !'
-
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained. 'Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to.'
..You could have heard a pin drop.

Oil Problem Can't be Fixed
Roanoke Times, 7/15/08, Pg 1: Bush lifts oil-drilling ban. Says this means that the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the US Congress.
The Roanoke Times editorial-news then goes on to state: “Experts agree that it would take at lest seven years before benefits from overturning the ban were evident”.
-
Did these same “unnamed experts” say that if Bill, Al, Hillary and Richardson had developed our energy resources when they were in office 16 years ago, things would be great now? We would have a nuclear power plant coming on-line every month, we’d have oil independence (not dependence) from our own assets; renewable solar, wind and energy start-ups would be coming on-line every month in volume, we’d be driving fuel-efficient vehicles made in the USA and our economy would be humming not hurting. What a shame they were such losers and laggards and let us all down!
The Roanoke Times forgot to fill us in on these simple truths on the way to more Bush-bashing.
-
Also, if we got serious tomorrow about drilling and energy independence, OPEC and other countries would increase production and reduce prices the next day. Why? Because it would make it more difficult for us to justify developing our domestic production. Sure way to kill the start-up competition, and then make up the shortfall later with another price increase.
-
It now appears that by November, the average American voter will well understand who has refused to develop our resources, who continues to stone-wall development and thereby continues to keep us in harms way. Your Democrat Congress at work!

Welcome to the Republican Party
I was talking to this little girl Catherine, the daughter of some friends, and she said she wanted to be President some day.
Both of her parents, liberal Democrats were standing therewith us - and Iasked Catherine - 'If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?'
Catherine replied - 'I would give houses to all the homeless people.'
'Wow - what a worthy goal you have there, Catherine.' I told her,
'You don't have to wait until you're President to do that, you can come over to my house and clean up all the dog poop in my back yard and I will pay you $10 dollars. Then we can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $10 dollars to use for a new house.'
Catherine (who was about 4) thought that over for a second, while her mom looked at me seething, and Catherine replied,
'Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and clean up the dog poop and you can just pay him the $10 dollars?'
And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party".(author unknown -- but very smart)

Roanoke Times and Bloggers
Roanoke Times, 7/13/08, Pg Horiz 2: Editorial: Bloggers on the take
Once I got past the title, I found this editorial to be the best so far this year. Many of the points made were valid and presented in a fair and profession manner. Kudos to the editor!
-
There clearly was some defensiveness about bloggers passing themselves off as “journalists” and perhaps some condescension relative to some blogs being “little more than virtual diaries.”
-
The core premise that “Real journalists follow strict rules about conflicts of interest” is more a matter of opinion than fact. I would argue that over 80% of the mainstream media has a major interest in promoting platforms and candidates of the Democrat party and I submit that includes the editorial staff of the Roanoke Times. There are approximately 1,000 items in this blog. About 80% address specific items in the Roanoke Times by name and page. I contend that an “impartial person” (wherever one might find such a rare bird) would conclude that my premise is correct. I of course am of the opposite persuasion; however, I do not have a journalist obligation to present complete, fair and balanced “news”. I can just be an old “kibitzer”.
-
The major concept behind this blog as stated in the original home page is:
http://www.roanokeslant.org/Purpose.htmlTHE ROANOKE SLANT
After reading the Roanoke Times newspaper for 15 years it is clear to me that their "slant" on the information they publish is not even close to neutral or balanced on many economic, social and political issues.
The Roanoke Slant "blog" is intended to be a very brief "diary" of some examples of their slant by contrasting it with an opposing view.
Some of the Papers slant methods include:
not covering a story,
blatant in-your-face slant,
subtle shades of gray, size and content of headlines,
area and location of coverage
Upon review of these items, over a period of time, one might conclude that there is an undeniable pattern of behavior. This may be helpful in the future by enabling objective vs subjective discussions.

Obama's Naive Youthful Followers
Little Suzy had a box of very small kittens that she was tryingto give away, so she had them out on the street corner with a sign 'FREEKITTENS' next to them.
Suddenly a long line of big black cars came upwith a policeman on a motorcycle in front. The cars all stopped and atall man stepped out from the biggest car. 'Hi, little girl, what do you have there in the box?' he asked. 'Kittens' Little Suzy says. 'They're so small, their eyes are not even open yet.'
'What kind of kittens are they?' he asked. 'Democrats' says Little Suzy. The tall man smiled, returned to his car and they drove away. Sensing a good photo opportunity, Sen. Obama called his campaign manager and told him about the little girl with the kittens. It was planned that they would return the next day, have all the media there and tell everyone about these 'democrat' kittens.
The next day, Little Suzy is standing out on the corner with her box of kittens with the 'FREE KITTENS' sign and the big motorcade of black cars pulled up with all the vans and trucks from ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN. Everyone had their cameras ready and then Sen. Obama got out of his limo and walked up to Little Suzy. 'Now don't be frightened,' he said, I just want you to tell all these nice news people just what kind of kittens you're giving away today.'
'Yes sir,' Suzy said, 'they are all REPUBLICAN kittens.'
Taken by surprise, Sen. Obama said, 'But yesterday you told me they were DEMOCRATS.'
Little Suzy says, 'Yes, I know.
But today, they have their eyes open.'

Obama for FISA?
Roanoke Times, 7/10/08, Pg A8: Obama shifts to middle by surveillance bill support by voting for it.
-
What a classic piece of Roanoke Times slant! Shifting to the middle! Is that what you call a total capitulation on a major issue he has opposed and that has consumed hundreds of square feet of ranting-print in the Roanoke Times over the past three years!
-
The highlight of the article slant – the RT didn’t even mention that this is the FISA bill. Yes friends, the bill the liberals have been telling us sucks the freedom out of our system and proves that Pres. Bush is an absolute monster and dangerous dictator!
-
And how about the nice touch of small print buried back on page A8!

Obama to Iran - Please Stop
Roanoke Times, 7/10/08, Pg 1: Major front page story: Iran sends message to US, Israel with missile test.
Obama: “What this underscores is the need for a clear policy that is putting the burden on Iran to change behavior.
-
Sounds like something spoken to a school teacher by the parent of a disruptive juvenile delinquent student. Is this guy for real? Does he have any understanding of what will happen when Iran puts a nuclear bomb in the nose-cone of one of those vehicles? Can he envision an Iranian freighter cruising to within 500 miles of the US coastline with these weapons of mass destruction ?
-
Apparently NOT! Obama’s latest “national defense policy statement” includes his pledge to “stop all work on our anti-missile defense system!”

When the Trickle-down Slows-down
Roanoke Times, 7-8-08: Service persons tips are way down, housing starts are meager, sales of homes are tepid and The Glebe Retirement facility is financially stressed.
-
The oil and housing/financial problems have clearly squeezed the financial growth spigot to a trickle.
-
Darn, those financially-successful people who have discretionary money to spend are being squeezed and aren’t spending. Discretionary, that means after all taxes and necessary bills are paid, there’s still some money left for what they want to do beyond what they need to do.
-
These are the bad dudes that the Democrats want to hammer with lots of additional taxes so that these folks won’t be able to buy new houses, cars, boats, electronic gadgets, eat out, and go on vacation.
The Democrats refuse to acknowledge that when financially-successful people spend discretionary money they create jobs and opportunities for lots of other folks.
This refusal is a key element in their election class-warfare strategy that is ingrained in their culture.
-
Clearly the key to improving our financial situation is to increase our domestic energy supply and stimulate small businesses to generate lots more financially-successful folks so that the Trickle-down becomes a stream helping all our people.
-
Even old folks are impacted. Today it’s hard to sell a home you’ve lived in for many years so that you can roll the money over into a retirement facility. Retirement facility occupancy rates are key to the quality of life that they can afford to deliver to their residents. The vacated home represents an opportunity for new folks to enter into home ownership.
-
A major opportunity for growth is also associated with the over 2 Million people we have added to our population each year since 1945. Expansion of private and corporate industry is vital to their growth and development and success.
-
It would be constructive if the Editors of the Roanoke Times and their Democrat associates read and followed the 10 Cannots of Rev. William J.H. Boecker
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_J._H._Boetcker-
"The 10 Cannots"
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatreds.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

Sadam's Yellow-cake
Not found in the Roanoke Times! Wonder why not?
-
The US moved 550 Tons (that’s over one Million pounds) of Sadam’s nuclear Yellow-cake from Iraq and moved it to Canada.
-
That’s the nuclear bomb stuff that Joe Wilson and his trophy-CIA-wife said Sadam didn’t have, isn’t’ it?
-
Perhaps Joe Wilson wasn’t the right person for his wife to send out to find out where Sadam was getting this stuff! Perhaps wifey should have sent Joe out for more mundane stuff – like milk and eggs!
-
What’s the media and their sponsors in the Democrat party going to cook-up to explain this?

We WON the Iraq War!
How do I know that?
1) The Democrats just passed a fully funded military budget that expends well into 2009.
2) The Democrats and the liberal press have stopped 24-7 coverage of the war.
3) Obama is “reconsidering” his position on the war.
4) We just moved 550 metric tons of Sadam’s nuclear "yellowcake from Iraq to Canada.
5) The media’s issues are now reduced to carping about how the Iraq government is handling contracts.
6) There are big increases in the projections for Iraq oil production.
7) US personnel and Iraq citizen casualties are way down.
8) Iraq has placed a major order for new Boeing passenger planes.
9) Al Satyr is staying holed-up in Iran.
10) The Democrats want us all to forget their track record for the past 3 years.
11) The enemy is trying to make a come-back in Afghanistan.

The G8 & Current Natural Global Warming
Roanoke Times, 7/6/08, Pg A11: G8 summit and Pres. Bush will tackle oil, global warming by Tom Raum AP:
-
“Atop the agenda is reducing the pollution that causes global warming”.
Albeit that reducing pollution and implementing green-energy is a good thing; the Roanoke Times and their friend Tom seem stuck on stating conjecture that suits their cause instead of publishing facts.
There is no scientific proof that establishes the basic cause of our current 250 year natural warming cycle:
-
1. The current 250 year natural global warming started in 1750, at the end of the little ice age.
http://www.roanokeslant.org/GlobalWarmingThoughts/GlacierHistory250Years/index.htm-
2. There was 200 years of natural global warming before any significant man-made CO2:
http://www.roanokeslant.org/GlobalWarmingThoughts/GlobalCO2.jpg-
3. The NASA published data clearly states that there is one (1) degree of warming during the last 100 years, that there was significant cooling during the 30 years (1940 – 1975) (directly after the massive pollution of WW1 and WW2 and Korea) and that there has been no warming during the last 10 years in spite of increased atmospheric CO2.
http://www.roanokeslant.org/GlobalWarmingThoughts/GlobalTemp1880-1998-2008.jpg-
4. There are over 30,000 signatures of scientists and engineers who have signed a petition stating that they do NOT subscribe to the hypothesis that man-made CO2 is causing global warming. That’s a lot of highly educated “hacks and apologists” that certainly have infinitely more intellectual horsepower than the RT Editorial Staff and their friend Tom at the AP
http://www.petitionproject.org/index.html-
5. It’s also interesting that the RT Editors are prime supports of Senator Reid and Congressperson Pelosi who’s only misguided attempt to solve our energy issues is to mandate burning our food in our vehicles.

2) Homer & Jethro’s Heehaw routine (if it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all!)

HIV+AIDS Pandemic Continues
Roanoke Times, 7/5/08, Pg A 6: Second-wave AIDS epidemic underway. Young homosexual men infection rate at 12%. Young black men at highest risk.
-
This pandemic will not be solved until the media and the government combines efforts to implement the basic public health processes used for all other highly communicable diseases.
-
This is not rocket science! These processes and procedures were developed as a result of Typhoid-Mary in 1907. Why do we continue to let thousands of our people get horribly ill and die from this plague? Why indeed?
-
And no Rev Jeremiah Wright – HIV+AIDS is not a white conspiracy to kill blacks and your racial rants are not helpful in solving this major problem that plagues your people.

A Housing Adjustment?
Roanoke Times Editorial, 6/29/08, Pg Horiz 2: Congress heading for a housing bill being sponsored by Democrat Cris Dodd.
-
A housing adjustment, indeed! What a colossal miscarriage of governmental and media responsibility and stewardship!
-
This editorial and the front pages of the Roanoke Times should be totally focused on the gross inappropriate relationship between Democrat Sen Dodd and Countrywide Financial Corp.
-
Countrywide is at the epicenter of the housing and financial crisis in this country and they have secretly given Democrat Sen Dodd and others special financial deals on loans he has made from them.
-
Democrat Sen Dodd is one of the primary government oversight characters in the “new improved ethically-clean and sterilized majority Democrat Congress”.
-
And what happens? Instead of being suspended from his position and under investigation as any Republican Senator would be, he sponsors a bill that helps Countrywide! And then what happens – the editorial staff of the Roanoke Times writes a two column editorial supporting and endorsing this bill and hides this scandal in fine print in the back of the paper!
-
Apparently not only does this group lack professionalism, they and their Democrat friends in Congress appear to have serious issues understanding ethical standards when it applies to their political team. So much for a fair and impartial press!

gasoline is only up 43% - about half as much as corn!

funds for the public-employees unions!

Vote for Change! The National Anthem?
Roanoke Times, 7/3/08, Pg A2: Rene Marie, a Roanoke native, shocks Denver with her version of national anthem. I pulled a switcherroonie on them she told the Denver Post.
What an interesting choice of wording the Roanoke Times editors chose: “Her version of the national anthem”.
-
A jazz singer shocked some Denver residents after replacing the words to the national anthem with those of the “Black National Anthem” during the annual State of the City address this week. Rene Marie (a Roanoker) was asked to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper delivered the annual address on Tuesday. Instead, and without prior disclosure, she sang the lyrics of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” — a hymn commonly referred to as the “Black National Anthem” — to the tune of the national anthem.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,375164,00.html-
Vote for Change! Too bad Michelle wasn’t there, they could have sung a duet that would have made Michelle proud one more time. Perhaps Denver (site of the upcoming Obama-DNC convention) should learn the words to the “new” national anthem before August. The rest of us have until Jan 20, 2009!
-
This all fits in well with Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama’s master’s thesis at Princeton University (entitled Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community). That thesis has been "temporarily withdrawn" from Princeton's library until after this year's presidential election in November. What a nice touch, can’t say Princeton doesn’t support their alumni and so much for the transparency concept.
However – much of the thesis is on the internet and will be read and discussed by lots of folks. Some have already reached the view that the race-based focus and tenor of the thesis explains her “haven’t been proud of my country” comment.

Arctic ice melting from the bottom
New evidence deep beneath the Arctic ice suggests a series of underwater volcanoes have erupted in violent explosions in the past decade.
-
Robert Reeves-Sohn of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts and his colleagues discovered jagged, glassy fragments of rock scattered around the volcanoes, suggesting explosive eruptions occurred between 1999 and 2001.
-
The eruptions discharge large amounts of carbon dioxide, helium, trace metals and heat into the water over long distances, he said.
-
The research, detailed in the June 26 issue of the journal Nature, was funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation and WHOI.

Hanoi-Jane's Friends are Back
Roanoke Times, 6/29/08, Pg 1: The Hanoi Hilton was a nice place, American POW’s were treated nicely, there was no torture there, and the AP and The Roanoke Times used a major part of the front page to give us this “news” update. The key source for all this “good” news is none other than a North Vietnamese prison guard who would like to vote for John McCain.
-
Apparently The Roanoke Times will soon follow-up this gross misrepresentation of history with an interview of some SS guards from Belsen and Dachau who will describe how nice the concentration-camps were and that they wished they could vote in the upcoming Israeli elections.
-
Based on this big front page article, one could conclude that the editors of the Roanoke Times must just love the photo of Hanoi-Jane on the enemy anti-aircraft gun simulating shooting down American planes.

Save the Trees?
Roanoke Times, 7/1/08, Pg A3: California choosing which lightning-started forest wildfires to battle.
Yet again millions of fine healthy mature trees are burning. Trees that should have been harvested for lumber and fiber except the “environmentalists” wanted to “save” them.
-
I wonder how many spotted owls have been cooked? They probably taste like chicken anyway.
-
Also, can’t fight the fires because logging roads have been banned! Apparently we don’t want access to the peoples-forest and we sure wouldn’t want to have fire-breaks!
-
Exactly how dull are we that we let people like the sierra club establish these ignorant public forest-management policies? However, soon the major media will be telling us how nicely the forest is recovering as they did when Yellowstone burned. Wouldn’t the forest recover just as nicely if we had harvested these mature trees instead of letting them burn?
-
And talk about CO2 and global warming. Weren’t all these trees breathing in CO2 and breathing out Oxygen? Nice move “environmentalists”!
