Gender College Achievement Gap Misses The Point

-
Roanoke Times, 1-11-2016: Pg 1, 6: Gap in gender of grads studied
Minorities doing better – men lag.
http://www.roanoke.com/news/education/higher_education/virginia-colleges-see-higher-graduation-rate-for-minority-students-/article_ddf3fe08-9a1f-583d-96ba-36b6974c289c.html
-
Lots of statistics about gender and racial disparity in Virginia college performance without any indication of the types and difficulty of the courses taken and the entry-level performance of anyone involved.
-
But, the real BIG NEWs in this article is the amazing data on how long students are taking to complete a 4-year degree program!
“VCU increased the six-year rate for black, Latino and Native American students by 15.5% between 2003 and 2013.
The article gives a series of similar data for multiple other Virginia colleges.
-
The “most racist” comment in the article: “Black males, on the other hand, are seen as threatening and menacing in society at large, and this forces them to isolate from others to avoid rejection.”
-
-
The achievement benchmark is stated as 6-Six-Years for a 4-Four-Year degree program!
What’s wrong with that situation?
What’s wrong with that measurement and criterion?
What’s wrong with this whole picture?
-
What’s the criteria for these students to enter these 4- year programs?
Who’s paying for this student 6-year-plus-welfare system?
Why aren’t these students “flunked-out” at the appropriate time?
-
Little wonder these colleges and universities charge astronomical tuitions for those who are deemed “able to pay”.
Clearly the taxpayers and those deemed “able to pay” are supporting a major  “student welfare system” in our colleges and universities!
-
Is it any wonder that foreign students excel in our schools?  They must be amazed at the lack of intellectual competition from our indigenous students.
What they don’t realize is that we’re big on:
Transvestites in the boy’s and girl’s rooms.
Inclusion of profoundly challenged students in the main-line classes.
Coddling of juvenile delinquents in the classrooms.
Dumbing-down the measurements to ensure no one feels inferior.
Big emphasis on sports to offset the dismal scholastic outcomes.
Paying coaches way more than STEM teachers.
-
-
A lesson in history:  Rutgers College 1956:
The dean of engineering on day one:
"Look to your right, look to your left, those people will be gone before you graduate."
And that’s exactly what happened before the junior year began.
There were NO four-plus year engineering graduates!
Industry and government recognized those engineering degrees that were awarded in 1960 as major accomplishments and indicators of knowledge, performance and capabilities.
Not clear what these current six-plus-year degrees signify.
