Roanoke Times Doubles-Down On Denigrating Roanoke Schools
-
Three days ago, The Roanoke
Times Headlined the repulsive premise:
“Shutting off Roanoke’s
school-to-prison pipeline”
Today the
Headline is: “Report: Schools have
suspension crisis”
However, within
the article they just had to regurgitate that nasty premise again:
“The high numbers of
suspensions and expulsions statewide are a concern because they contribute to the “school-to-prison” pipeline, the
report’s authors said in a statement.”
-
What is wrong with these
supposedly intelligent “journalists”?
The prison pipeline runs
directly from dysfunctional homes, gangs and drugs and the good news is that
schools save many of those who are in that pipeline!
-
The primary mission of our
schools is to successful teach as many students as possible in a safe teaching
and learning environment.
That by definition excludes
those who are dedicated to not learning and who ensure others cannot teach or
learn and who then become physically disruptive and potentially dangerous when
confronted about their unacceptable behavior.
-
This blog has confronted the
RT Editors many times, going back to 2006, about their very misguided views of
what goes on in public school classrooms and the challenges our teachers and
administrators face.

What a pathetic follow-up to McAuiliffe’s totally misguided focus and
direction.

Virginia
has a school suspension crisis, report says
By Sara Gregory sara.gregory@roanoke.com 981-3227

Virginia schools push students out of school through
“widespread, discriminatory overuse” of suspension and expulsion, according to
a new report from the Virginia
Legal Aid Justice Center’s JustChildren program.
The Charlottesville-based
nonprofit analyzed data that schools reported to the Virginia Department of
Education for the 2014-15 school year. Schools must report the number students
who receive either short-term or long-term suspensions and the number of
students who are expelled.
The high numbers of
suspensions and expulsions statewide are a concern because they contribute to the “school-to-prison” pipeline, the
report’s authors said in a statement.

The “Virginia LegalAid Justice
Center’s JustChildren
Program
https://www.justice4all.org/justchildren/justchildren-program/
"The JustChildren Program
is Virginia’s
largest children’s law program. We rely on a range of strategies to make sure
the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable young people receive the services and
support they need to lead successful lives in their communities"
-
-
It’s difficult to comprehend
how this organization, that claims to help children, does not understand that
those who prevent teaching and learning in the classroom robs all the students
of an education so vital to success in life.
Was not the UNCF’s
Motto: The Mind is an awful thing to
waste!
One cannot get back a day of
teaching and learning that was stolen!
Teachers and students
deserve a safe and nurturing learning setting.
-
It is indeed sad that our
Governor has chosen to support and reward those whose bad behavior diminishes our
public school system.
