Energy Secretary Steven Chu stunned the audience at a London scientific conference Tuesday (5/26/09) with a radical but simple proposal to combat global warming: Paint all the roofs of all the buildings in the world white. If we did so, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist said, and if we also made sure the world's roads and sidewalks were light-colored, it would have the same effect on global warming as taking all the cars in the world off the world's roads for 11 years.

Back in 1975, after 35 years of significant global cooling, the scientific consensus was that we were entering another “little ice age” and that the best solution was to send crop-duster planes to the Polar Regions to cover the ice and snow with black dust. The black dust would absorb the suns heat instead of having the ice and snow reflecting the suns heat.

Both Va senators (Webb & Warner) praised the Supreme Court nominee’s “personal story”

Apparently the voters for “hope and change” have directed that the new major qualifications and responsibilities for our highest court are compassion and a moving personal story instead of judicial excellence and intellect.

It appears that a new oath of office and a new depiction of Lady Justice will also be required to adapt to the new criteria.

According to Title 28, Chapter I, Part 453 of the United States Code, each Supreme Court Justice takes the following oath: -"I, [NAME], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as [TITLE] under the Constitution and laws of the United States. So help me God."

My understanding has been that the oath was reflective and consistent with the symbol of Lady Justice, Justitia. She is depicted wearing a blindfold. This is done in order to indicate that justice is (or should be) meted out objectively, without fear or favor, regardless of identity, power, or weakness: blind justice and blind impartiality.
She also is depicted with a set of weighing scales typically suspended from her left hand, upon which she measures the strengths of a case's support and opposition. She is also often seen carrying a double-edged sword in her right hand, symbolizing the power of Reason and Justice, which may be wielded either for or against any party.

Hopefully, during the hearings, the Senate Republicans will conduct themselves in a far superior and professional manner than did a number of vile and nasty Democrats during hearings for Judge Robert Bork and Justice Clarence Thomas. In fact those processes became so nasty and vindictive that the term Borked became part of the vernacular.

Roanoke Times, 5/3/09, Pg Horiz 1: We can’t let torture destroy justice.
A rambling 220 square inch expose by Mark Danner, a prof. at UCs Berkeley, admonishing everyone for the horrors of water-boarding those nice folks and their associates who have bombed and killed many Americans including 3,000 on 9/11.

This expose is in addition to almost daily comments by Obama and his associates including selective disclosure of documents that describe the analysis and conclusions by those who were missioned to protect the citizens of America against a vicious organization of terrorists who have and still are focused on killing American people.

Caught up in all this hindsight and retribution are those who had a sworn duty to protect America but now have selective amnesia and a new moral view. Included is Nancy “The Broom” Pelosi who is third in line for the Presidency. She is now making daily “adjustments” to her recollections about what she knew and when she knew it. Many other Senators and Congresspersons were informed and consistent with their oath of office and their responsibilities to “protect and defend” concluded that water-boarding was not sufficiently abhorrent when measured against the war that had been launched against our people.

Perhaps it would be reasonable and prudent to relate water-boarding to the daily use by police of “tasering” disruptive people who don’t want to be arrested. Having seen many videos of the use of this tool, and the fact that each year numerous persons die after being “tased” one might conclude that water-boarding to save innocent lives may be a reasonable process and is not “destroying justice” but in fact may be exercising justice.

Perhaps during a time of war the law of retaliation (lex talionis) is appropriate. This recognized military theory of retributive justice says that reciprocity should be equal to the wrong suffered; "life for life, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. One might conclude that a minute of drowning-fright to save innocent lives is far less retributive than the wrong we have suffered and continue to suffer.
