Every state has a Dept of Education responsible for the Management and Direction of the schools in that state including teacher education, certification and student graduation requirements.
Tax-payer education funds at the Federal Level, if any, should be allocated directly to the states based on needs and equity allocations!
The role of a small dept of ed at the federal level would be to Maintain Data Bases of:
State testing content and outcomes
State best educational practices
Best teacher education facilities, content, certification and outcomes.

The National Guard will be deployed to Portland, Oregon, for the next two months, following an order by US President Donald Trump.
At least 200 National Guard members will be deployed to the city to "protect federal property" where protests are "occurring or likely to occur", according to a memo sent by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Sunday.
Trump on Saturday said he had authorized the use of "full force" if needed to suppress protests targeting immigration detention centers.

In my one-room school, 100- miles from Times Square, we were required to fill-in a small booklet devoted to pen-man-ship (skills of cursive writing).
Apparently, Biden White House used a hi-tech machine to do what we had to perform with an ‘inkwell pen’. It was required back then that we each did our own work.
Talk about progress and automation and perfection.
